Custom Oak Kitchen in the East Village, NY
This apartment sits a short walk from Astor Place. The brief was a kitchen that could hold everything a Manhattan apartment has to store and still read as calm from the dining table.
Everything you see is custom cabinetry, built in stained oak veneer and finished in two textures rather than one. The wall units and the refrigerator panels are flat with handleless wall units, so the upper half of the room stays quiet. The base units are reeded, with brass pulls.
The building would not take a new exterior vent, so the hood recirculates through a custom made brass grille that subtly sits in the ceiling scribe and nods to the handles and faucet.
Quartzite runs across the counters and returns up the wall, shaped into a curved upstand where the run meets the corner.
Past the kitchen, the cabinetry carries on into the dining room. It is still storage, but from a chair at the table it reads as furniture. Designed and installed by Install.
