What to know When You’re Remodeling A kitchen

  • Planning & design

Planning your remodel lays the foundations for the project. There are so many facets to consider it’s easy to overlook certain elements, so work closely with your design professional to make sure you’ve covered everything.

  • Layout reconfiguration

It’s worth exploring different layout options, but know that making significant alterations, like removing or adding walls, could involve architectural planning, permits and additional construction work.

  • Demolition

Demolition can be downplayed, so it’s important to have a team who prioritize the safeguarding of surfaces and safety of communal spaces.

  • Construction

Certain kitchens require existing walls to be reinforced. This means adding necessary blocking to support the new or updated kitchen layout.

  • Electrical & plumbing

Electrical outlets, switches and plumbing services might need to move to align with the new kitchen layout. Permits may be needed to carry out these modifications and there can also be unforeseen upgrades needed.

  • Flooring & decoration

Laying new flooring sometimes requires new subfloors, soundproofing and/or waterproofing membranes. Priming walls and interior moldings before painting ensures color adherence, richness and longevity, so we always recommend this. It can also be advantageous to apply a final coat post installation.

  • Cabinetry

This phase is often rewarding because you start to see clear progress. Cabinetry installation typically takes one to two weeks.

  • Appliances

Appliances are often replaced during a full kitchen remodel. As key design features with a new kitchen, it’s imperative the correct models are ordered and installed to achieve the desired synergy with the new cabinetry.

  • Countertops & backsplash

Thinking about whether you’d like granite, quartz, marble, butcher block early on is a good idea because the thickness of your chosen countertops can impact cabinetry dimensions, and material lead times can slow a project down. Additionally, templating to installation can take 5-7 days for countertops and backsplash fabrication and installation can take an additional 5-7 days on top of that.

  • Final touches

A penultimate inspection should always be conducted. During this time outstanding touch-ups, alignments, and connections are identified and completed to ensure the new kitchen is finished and functional.

  • Sign-off inspection

Finally, a project inspection and quality assurance check should take place to ensure the completed project complies with the design specifications and building codes.
